Search Engine Optimization - Links PDF Print E-mail

Why are Back Links to my site  Important?

One of the most important search engine marketing variables for ranking high is link popularity, or the number of relevant links pointing to your site.  The idea for the original algorithm behind Goggle search was based on the process of academic citation.  In other words, the more people who "cite" you, or link to you, the more valuable your content.  While it's not the only factor taken into account for ranking, it is important.

Most of the major search engines take link backs into account, and Goggle tends to stay slightly more link-sensitive than the others. MarketLeap offers a great tool to check the number of links or "votes" pointing to your site, and how you stand in relation to your competitors' links.

How to Use the MarketLeap Link Back Calculator

This tool is linked from Tendencies' set of Search Engine Tools as the fourth tool.

  1. Simply click on the Link Back Calculator, enter your site URL in the first field
  2. Enter 3 other URL's (preferably competitors) in the next three fields
  3. Fill out the security access code and generate your report.

This tool should give you a good idea of where you stand regarding your link-backs.  The results may not be entirely accurate, or off by a few links, but it gives you a general idea of where your site stands in relation to not only your competitors, but to the entire Web community in general.

*Keep in mind, however, that the MarketLeap report is producing a straight number.  Goggle takes the source of the link back and that site's relevancy and credibility into account as well (a site with a higher Page Rank is worth more).
